Cheng Chien-Chang¡¦s ¡§Taiwan¡¦s Evolution¡¨ can be compared to a revolving history of Taiwan¡¦s immigration and reclamation. It is a creation which Cheng narrates people in Taiwan island going through the land, the ocean and inner experience. Perhaps the land, the ocean and the soul that construct this ¡§Taiwan¡¦s Evolution ¡¨ is related to ¡§legends¡¨, but it keeps the certain distance from ¡§mythology¡¨ and ¡§the history of power struggle¡¨.

Cheng conceptualizes and constitutes the inner strength of Taiwan¡¦s history, a history filled with mercy, tolerance and contentment. In addition to paying close attention to this history, he embarks upon a search for the ¡§gaze¡¨ and ¡§slow motion¡¨. Curve strokes and solid color blocks that resemble undulating hills are the unique features of Cheng¡¦s works. Be it land, ocean or stout human body, his art practice moves towards particular time and space, but at the same time breaks through? it and knows no boundary.

Cheng¡¦s recent works, ¡§Nature as Teacher¡¨ series, borrows the name from a Chinese classic poem by Li Po which goes ¡§Nature with its marvelous scenery is


the most exciting story for me to learn.¡¨ This series features the land or nature inseparable with the energy of the universe, and various plump figures. These all contain the uninterrupted flow of life force. The representation itself bears resemblance to the accumulation of fluid; it is solid and mild, but not without an implication of turbulence. Likewise, under Cheng¡¦s deep affection to this island, there is worry and concern about future uncertainty. However, with the utmost respect to the earth and sky, one may come to realize that compared to this vast, powerful nature, any artificial plots or intrigues would be insignificantly small and lowly. Therefore, the earth and the people, just like how they appear to be, form a contradictory yet complimentary and inseparable pair.
