Scarecrow
The work Scarecrow (2012) was installed to look down the viewer from a height of 4 meters like the statue of God. By keeping the height and angle that is similar to the ones people look up their God at the religious place, the work tried to show powerful icon. The spread of the Internet made people to be consumed by too much information, and it now is not easy to figure out its truth and falsehood. Sometimes, people make or find their own truth from Internet. In addition, people confess their wishes through the Internet as if they were praying and confessing at the religious place. For example, if someone who lost her/his dog appeals over the Internet, other users logged in disseminate the information and it goes on. In the end, someone knowing this information in real world might find the dog. It happens often. Based on these thoughts, CHOE interpreted this information era as a certain form of a religion. The shape of the work is a long and thin body with wings like an angle or devil, and the surface is wound by electric wire transferring the information. The inside is empty, but is filled with light instead. And he made this light to be exposed out at random through the small gaps between the wires. With this reason, the entire exhibition space where the work installed becomes full of moving shadows created by the light. We log on the Internet to communicate, but the real entity or object doesn’t exist there. This work also expresses the world existing only as the information itself.
